This month is Skin Cancer Awareness Month. Held every May, this month places a particular focus on spotting the signs of skin cancer – the most serious form of sun damage. Â
Of course, not all sun exposure leads to skin cancer, however, at Light Touch Clinic, we feel as though it is important to remind our patients that UV rays can be detrimental when it comes to the effect they can have on the skin. Skin cancer isn’t the only type of sun damage there is – it takes many forms. We will discuss several of them in this blog and inform you how we can help you to reverse these signs of sun damage.
What Are The Other Types Of Sun Damage?
As we mentioned, skin cancer is the most serious and arguably the most notable type of sun damage. There are almost 17,000 new melanoma cases diagnosed in the UK each year and sadly, many of them may have been prevented with adequate UVA and UVB protection. It is important to contact your doctor if you notice any new moles, or changes in size, shape and texture of existing ones.
Other types of sun damage that we come across quite often include: pigmentation such as age spots, loss of elasticity, fine lines and melasma, amongst others. Melasma can be both triggered by the sun, and worsened by the sun, so if you already have this condition, it is particularly important to shield yourself. Freckles, too, are often thought to be a sign of sun damage, but as they are typically an inherited feature, this isn’t quite the case.
You may be surprised to learn that UV exposure can lead to lax skin! This is because elastin fibres become damaged when met with the sun’s rays. This won’t necessarily become evident after one sunbathing session, but with time, you may be faced with the signs of premature ageing as a result of sun damage.
How We Can Target Premature Ageing
At Light Touch Clinic, we offer a range of treatments that will help to reduce, and in some cases, eliminate the visible signs of ageing. Dermalux LED phototherapy is a firm favourite amongst our patients.
Dermalux LED phototherapy uses light energy to repair the skin from within through the use of controlled wavelengths of red, blue and infrared light. We understand that it may seem counterproductive to fight one type of ray with another, but the combination used in this procedure is proven to help to revive dull, tired and pigmented skin.
We also recommend INTRAcel – one of the most premium microneedling treatments on the market, which our founder, Natalie Geary, was instrumental in launching. This treatment boosts collagen and elastin production. Over time, this reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and improves the overall texture and tone of the skin. With the addition of radiofrequency technology takes this treatment even further. Using a patented system, radiofrequency energy totally bypasses the epidermis to deliver the 3mm exposed needle tip to the dermal layer. This makes INTRAcel one of the most effective treatments on the market.
