What is pigmentation?
Pigmentation is a darkening of an area of skin and resembles large freckles sometimes called age spots, liver spots or sun spots.
What causes pigmentation?
Pigmentation is caused by on over-production of melanin. It is usually the result of sun damage, scarring, hormonal changes which can occur during pregnancy (melasma) or taking the contraceptive pill. Birthmarks and freckles are a different type of pigmentation.
Pigmentation can take years to appear, new sun spots can be the result of sun damage from a decade ago!
The most important thing you can do to prevent pigmentation from getting worse is to protect your skin with a sunscreen of SPF30 or above, not just in summer but all year round. We have a selection of excellent oil-free facial sunscreens in our skincare shop.
