Pigmentation is a darkening of an area of skin and resembles large freckles sometimes called age spots, liver spots or sun spots. These can occur all over the body, but typically they are seen on skin frequently exposed such as the face, neck, hands and decolletage.

What causes pigmentation?

Pigmentation is caused by on over-production of melanin. It is usually the result of sun damage, scarring, hormonal changes which can occur during pregnancy (melasma) or taking the contraceptive pill. Birthmarks and freckles are a different type of pigmentation.

Pigmentation can take years to appear, new sun spots can be the result of sun damage from a decade ago!

The most important thing you can do to prevent pigmentation from getting worse is to protect your skin with a sunscreen of SPF30 or above, not just in summer but all year round. We have a selection of excellent oil-free facial sunscreens in our skincare shop.

What are the treatments?

At the Light Touch Clinic we offer several treatments that are effective in reducing the appearance of pigmentation and restoring luminosity to the skin. These are:

I came to the Light Touch Clinic last year because of problems with facial pigmentation. Dr Natalie advised the Obagi Nu Derm treatment and the results were amazing! I took photos during my treatment and couldn’t believe the difference! I would recommend this to anyone with this problem. It isn’t a quick solution and requires time, a little discomfort and perseverance but was worth every penny!”
