If you have used high street skincare all your life, you might be surprised by the prices of cosmeceuticals sold at cosmetic clinics. Why is a cosmeceutical anti-ageing serum more expensive than an anti-ageing serum available at the supermarket?
This is a really important question and this blog post seeks to explain the difference between high street skincare and cosmeceuticals.
Firstly, what is a cosmeceutical?
Cosmeceuticals bridge the gap between pharmaceutical skincare and high street (cosmetic) skincare. These products have high levels of active ingredients and are scientifically proven to work. These are the types of skincare products that are only available from cosmetic clinics and skin experts.
One of the most important things to remember with cosmeceutical skincare is that there is a lot of research that goes into these products behind the scenes. Cosmeceutical ranges are backed by scientific evidence – not user polls or celebrity endorsements. Research and testing the efficacy of a product to this degree does add to the final cost, but clinical research to this level ensure that the product is effective. This makes the product better value in the long run.
As we are not often advised when purchasing a high street skincare product, cosmetic companies need to make sure that the ingredients are not too potent to minimise adverse effects in case we pick up the wrong product. In addition, there are laws regulating how strong high-street skincare can be.
While a product might contain helpful ingredients featured in cosmeceutical products such as ‘Glycolic Acid’ or ‘Salicylic acid’, you will find that the high street products use a significantly weaker form of the ingredient which means that they won’t get the same results cosmeceutical skincare can.
Another advantage of coming to a cosmetic clinic to purchase your skincare is the knowledge of the staff. With so many skincare products out there, it can be really hard to know what product is right for you.
Our skincare experts have a thorough understanding of the skin which means that they can assess your skin properly and work out what it specifically needs. As opposed to brand reps in a department store who can advise only on one skincare brand, our clinic team have a knowledge of all the different ranges that we offer. This means that our experts can cherry pick the most suitable items from various cosmeceutical ranges to create a routine that is designed for you.
Consultations with cosmetic practitioners also allow you to understand your skin better and how to care for it.
