Blushing Bride: IPL for Rosacea

I was very excited when I found out that we were getting an IPL machine! I have rosacea which is a long-term skin condition which causes my face to frequently flush. The exact cause of this condition is unknown but it’s thought that rosacea caused by problems in facial blood vessels. In my case, it’s not a constant problem but I find that certain activities trigger flushing such as stress, exercise and alcohol.

While there is no real cure for rosacea, the condition can be controlled with IPL. I have had IPL previously at the clinic and in my case it really helped with rosacea. Different from a laser, like we use for our Soprano Ice Hair Removal treatment, an IPL uses intense pulsed light to damage the rogue blood vessels causing rosacea. Over the next few weeks, the blood vessels fade away as they removed by the body,

After Janine explained the theory to me, I was ready to get started. I was given some protective glasses to wear and a cold gel was applied to my skin. Janine explained that this was to cool the skin and help direct the light.

The treatment itself felt warm and a bit like someone was pinging an elastic band on my skin. Janine checked on me to make sure that I was OK and asked me to let them know if I needed a break. Whilst it wasn’t the most comfortable experience of my life, it wasn’t unbearable and the end goal is definitely worth a little discomfort!

After the treatment, I’m looking a little flushed and feel a little bit tender, but nothing to stop me carry on working! For rosacea, I was recommended a course of 5 treatments taken a few weeks apart. We took some ‘before’ photographs before I went in for my treatment, so I’ll be sure to share my results after my course. One of the important things to remember is that post-treatment you cannot be exposed to prolonged UV exposure. Whilst this isn’t too much of a problem at the moment as it isn’t summer, I was advised to wear SPF 50 everyday on my face.
