CoolSculpting has been cleared by the FDA for treating double chins!
This week CoolSculpting has been approved by the FDA for treating chin fat and chin tissue laxity which is big news in the aesthetic industry and important for our patients too.
What is FDA approval?
Short for the Food and Drugs Administration, the FDA is a regulatory body in the U.S. which tests and reviews various products for their safety, this includes new vaccines, X-ray machines and complex medical devices such as CoolSculpting. To have your innovation approved by the FDA means that the benefits are proven to outweigh the risk.
Sadly, the UK doesn’t have an equivalent to the FDA. So when we are choosing new technologies for our clinic, we look for FDA-approval as a sign of safety and success. Looking for FDA approval is also a useful tool for patients too when comparing different treatments and clinics.
Unfortunately, getting FDA approval can be an expensive and time consuming affair and this is often reflected in the price of the treatment. While devices can claim to use similar technology as CoolSculpting, they cannot claim to be FDA approved as, at the end of the day, there product has not undergone the FDA’s rigorous testing.
Double Chin Removal with CoolSculpting
We get a lot on enquiries into non-invasive double chin treatments and jowl lifts. This is largely due to the fact that this area can be tricky to treat with diet and exercise alone – sadly you can squat away a double chin!
If you have had CoolSculpting before, you will know that it is a highly-skilled procedure. Like our other CoolSculpting treatments, the treatment itself begins with marking up the area. For an even, smooth result, Melissa will work out how to best place the applicator. As no two chins are the same, she is rather the perfectionist when it comes to marking up!
Once happy with the placement, the applicator is applied. There is a slight tugging sensation (less than our other CoolSculpting applicators) as the double chin is drawn in to a vacuum. Intense cooling is then felt before the area goes numb. The treatment itself takes 45 minutes and during this time you can relax with one of our iPads and catch up on your favourite Netflix series.
After the 45 minutes the applicator is removed and the chin is massaged to break up the crystalised fat cells. Most of our patients get back to their regular routine right away which makes this a good treatment for patients who do not want to be taking time off work or want to be discreet about their procedure.
Best results will be seen 3 months post-treatment but many patients start to notice a difference in as a little as 3 weeks.
One of Melissa’s patients has kindly shared her before and after photographs with us:
