IPL vs Laser Hair Removal
I have done lots of hair removal, starting with waxing, moving on to IPL and now I have finally got my hands on a Soprano Ice – fab!
Most of my clients don’t know the difference between IPL and Laser, in fact, they are often advertised as the same thing. The reality is, they are poles apart. So I thought, with my first blog I would explain the difference.
Firstly, what is IPL? It’s not actually a laser. IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. It works by firing light energy into the skin. The energy is absorbed by the pigment in the hair, destroying the hair. The main problem with IPL is that it is far less controllable than laser, it can cause burning, especially on darker skins where there is more pigment and it can be super painful (commonly described as feeling like elastic bands being twanged against your skin- no thanks!) it also takes ages to do, from a therapists point of view, this means sore back and shoulders.
Why do we prefer laser and specifically why Soprano? Laser works by using a direct light beam which goes straight into the hair follicle, this means there is much less chance of burning the skin*, it is far more efficient and if we use the Soprano, it is virtually pain free. The Soprano combines 2 different types of laser, meaning that it is suitable for all types of skin and hair. The Diode head combats coarse, thick, dark hairs and the Alexandrite head is great for thinner, finer, lighter hair.
The Soprano is especially brilliant as it is so comfortable*. It heats the skin gradually, minimising the risk of burning, it is one of the safest lasers in the world. We use an “in-motion” technique which means we constantly move the head of the laser across the skin, so the skin never gets too hot. The Soprano Ice also has the “Ice Tip” which is used to cool the skin, making Soprano hair removal a great experience, unlike the medieval torture of IPL!
Soprano is one of the best lasers I have worked with. It’s a very rewarding part of my job to see my client’s confidence increase as they are no longer embarrassed and self-conscious about trying to hide and cover up their hair.*
