Do I really need to wear SPF every day?
Many of us are good at applying sun protection products whilst on holiday or during the summer, but not all of us use SPF every day. While much of the year the UK is overcast with grey skies, clouds do not keep us protected from the sun’s harmful rays. Indeed, less than 25% of the sun’s UV rays are blocked by clouds.
With experts estimating that 80% of ageing is caused by photo damage and plenty of fab products at the clinic with SPF, there is no excuse not to include an SPF product into your routine!
While many of us feel we look better and healthier with a little bit of a tan, sporting a tan is your body’s way of telling you that you have caused damage.
A tan is caused by melanin-producing cells called ‘Melanocytes’. When exposed to UVB radiation, these cells produce more melanin to protect the hypodermis (the layer under your skin) from DNA photo damage. The dark melanin will block the radiation from passing under the skin by absorbing much of the UVB light.
Over time, too much exposure to sunlight can have a negative effect on your skin as it can break down collagen and even cause age spots.
At the Light Touch Clinic we have two products which deliver fantastic sun protection and are easy to wear every day: ZO Oclipse Smart Tone and ZO Oclipse Sunscreen and Primer.
ZO Oclipse Smart Tone is an SPF 50 sunscreen which provides broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection and is has a special antioxidant complex which protects against photo damage. In addition to keeping your skin safe in the sun, this product acts as a sheer tinted primer which adapts to your skin tone.
ZO Oclipse Sunscreen and Primer is a fantastic base for makeup as it smooths the skin and reduces the appearance of any fine lines. Oclipse Sunscreen and Primer also has factor 30 SPF, offering protection against UVA, UVB and high-energy visible (HEV) light. Like Smart Tone it has a time-release antioxidant complex to protect the skin against photo damage for 12 hours.
Prevention is better than cure. So next time you pop in for a treatment or to pick up an anti-ageing product, make sure you buy a preventative product too.
