Meet: Salicylic Acid

Best for: keeping oily skin healthy, treating and managing acne

If you have oily or acne-prone skin, you may already be familiar with this clever ingredient. Derived from the bark of the willow tree, salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid which has been used on the skin for centuries. Unlike its alpha-hydroxy cousins, salicylic acid is able to penetrate oil on the skin to thoroughly clear out clogged pores which is why it is the star ingredient in many cleansers made for oily and acne-prone skin such as iS Clinical Cleansing Complex.

Infused with salicylic acid from white willow bark and antioxidant-rich chamomile and gotu kola, this clarifying face wash is formulated for men and women of all skin types. It exfoliates and unclogs pores to boost cell turnover, soothes inflamed skin and counters free radical damage.

Salicylic acid also has an anti-inflammatory effect which means that when applied to the skin in a topical treatment, it can improve the appearance of inflamed acne and soothe sore skin.

A little goes a long way when it comes to salicylic acid. Most skincare will contain up to 2% salicylic acid with targeted spot treatments and cosmeceuticals boasting the highest concentrations. However, for more troublesome skin you can have higher concentrations of salicylic acid applied to the skin by a professional as part of a chemical peel. One peel we’re particularly fond of at the clinic is the Mesoestetic salicylic acid peel which contains a potent concentration of 20%.

When using salicylic acid in your skincare routine, don’t forget to apply good sun protection (SPF 30+, oil-free) as it can make your skin more sensitive to the sun. Sorry, the SPF in your foundation does not count!
